Art meets science in photographer James Balog’s Extreme Ice Survey. The project, begun in December 2006, will attempt to capture global warming in the act using 26 solar-powered cameras taking time-lapse photographs of glaciers in Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, the Alps, and the Rocky Mountains. Balog hopes the ambitious effort, which will produce more than 300,000 images over the course of two years, “radically alters public perception of the global warming issue.”

Good food, fine wines, tent, your comfiest sleeping bag and several changes of clothing – everything will fit into your stable sea kayak as you head towards the outstanding Swedish archipelago.

Canoe over water to places the larger boats never venture and find your very own tranquil paradise on some deserted island.

The many Swedish archipelagos all have their own special characteristics. Norrbotten archipelago in the extreme north is very extensive and suitable for an extra long canoe excursion. Further south you will find Höga Kusten (the High Coast) with its high, rocky, dramatic archipelago.Stockholm archipelago comprises over 24,000 islands, skerries and islets, some inhabited – others deserted.

You can start your canoeing in the heart of Stockholm City and set out on a several week long canoeing holiday. If you grow tired of sleeping in a tent and cooking food on a gas stove, there is a rich offering of top-class restaurants, charming hotels and value-for-money youth hostels and boarding houses spread throughout the archipelago.

Another unique island world for kayaking can be found on the west coast, to the north and south of Gothenburg, with its more barren and wild rocky islands that have a pink shimmer and where there are excellent opportunities for canoeing close to seal colonies basking in the sun. The St Anna and Västervik archipelagos on the east coast, along with the vast, elongated Lake Mälaren, are also well-known canoeing waters.

Crackerjack is a Nautors Swan but with racing still very close to his heart, the owner has also made sure he can show a respectable result during the occasional regatta.

Her deck layout allows for a relatively small crew being able to race her. This of course means she is a very simple Nautors Swan to cruise. There is ample room for guests to be comfortable but her layout also allows you the opportunity to get away from it all with a minimum of fuss and crew as required.

The dashing Italian Mochi Craft Dolphin 44 is hard to resist after a few days aboard on Long Island’s East End.

She looks sensational, of course, even from a million miles away. As we cruised the waters of the North Fork, several yachtsmen circled to ogle and yell out questions. “See?” grinned Da Zara, after the third admirer promised to pop into the Allied office for an upclose look and test run, “We may even sell a boat today.”

But is a test drive with the Mochi 44 a little like the let-down of a second date with a supermodel? Depends on the supermodel. Some are gorgeous and speak several languages-likewise, the Mochi 44 has substance. Longterm commitment? We can’t speak to your personal issues, but she is surprisingly spacious. In fact, this could be the possible deal-clincher for those traditionalists made faint of heart by her price tag. With the Mochi 44 you get glamour and comfort.

The cockpit is large with leather bench seating on either side that curves around at the top. In the deck saloon, a C-shaped leather settee is to port, just aft of the helm, and wraps nicely around an extendable teak dining table. A credenza to starboard hides a refrigerator and stowage.

The helm layout has been tweaked from earlier versions-it’s handsome and sensible. Air conditioning vents keep the skipper cool on hot days, when he’s decided to open the retractable awning that’s set into the overhead. A leather helm seat folds into a backrest
