I have been fortunate to spend many years travelling to the Hawaiian islands, and this gallery is a meditation on the influence of the ocean on everyone who visits or lives there. Surrounded constantly by clouds, sun, wind and sea, the ocean draws everyone in to stop and stare. And to get out in the water by any means possible. from outriggers to stand up paddle boards to surfboards to body alone. – Grant Myrdal, photographer

The transparent shells of tiny Cypridina hilgendorfii, found in the coastal waters and sands of Japan, hold a creature that emits a luminous blue substance when disturbed. During World War II, the Japanese harvested these creatures for soldiers to use when reading maps and messages at night.

Located just off the Mount Maunganui Main Beach, Moturiki (Leisure Island) is a tiny island with walkways that lead to various spots for great views of the Pacific Ocean and outlying islands. At the island’s seaward end is the infamous “blowhole.” When big seas are running, the waves crash against the rocks at the end of the island, creating spectacular geyser-like displays. The walking track to the blowhole takes 10 minutes, and the rocks near the blowhole are great spots for picnics or just watching the surfers, swimmers and other Main Beach action throughout the year

Low Tide at Ocean Beach. San Francisco, California.

It wouldn’t be a day at the beach in San Francisco without patchy clouds, ever looming fog, 20 mile an hour winds and an average water temperature of 45 degrees… and we wouldn’t have it an other way.
