    Melges 32, a speed believer

I was surprised when Tim Flanagan went all Glen Beck on underwater lights last week. It hadn’t occurred to me that “no boat owner with an ounce of sense” would drill a hole below his or her waterline just to “make the water glow pretty colors”.  In fact, senseless me has long considered going for the dramatic effect above (compliments DeepSea Power & Light) on Li’l Gizmo, which has become fairly reasonable and easy thanks to gear likeOceanLED’s Amphibians. You’ll note that they are surface mounted, and hence only need a cable hole through the hull (they also purportedly run cool enough to use on deck). But, heck, I’d  consider putting bigger holes in big Gizmo’s transom if the LED and thermoplastic casing technologies reach the right cost/performance point, which is where they seem headed.  Any underwater fitting deserves especially carefull installation, but I don’t think fixed underwater lights compare, danger-wise, to true thru-hulls which involve a forever hole protected only by an often open valve and a hose.  Has anyone heard of an underwater light causing a sinking?  And while I won’t argue that anyone really needs underwater lights, they sure can be beautiful…

    25 August 2010

Two races were held today in 14 knot, Easterly winds off the South coast of Spain. Artemis had an ok day….middlle of the fleet in both races.

We made a strategic decision this morning to not get in any close situations, no possible fouls, to just sail clean and see where the chips would fall. It is the first day of a five day event and a 5, 6 are both keepers in this fleet. Where we want to be on Sunday is in a position to win.

Today, the right hand side of the course was very favored upwind due to the Easterly flowing current offshore. The committee did not bias the line to the left so the fleet was bunched up at the committee boat end of the line at the starts. Emirates Team New Zealand is being protested by Matador for an infraction at the start of the second race.

We have the same good boat speed that we had at Barcelona and that is very valuable for the coming days.

We did make a few mistakes, mostly downwind on the first run of each race, that probably cost us two places in each race.

My son Danny is here with me this week. Today he sailed at the “guest” onboard. Most days he gives the guys a hand on the tender. We work out together in the mornings, eat together with the team, sleep in the same room, even watched the movie “Hangover” together last night. It is nice for me to have him around!

It is still 34C or about 94F right now a 1800. Going for a swim.

The B52 is the latest of the B Yacht range designed by Luca Brenta and built by Adria Sail.

Genie of the Lamp is a customized version, with the coachroof (and subsequently the interior accommodations) removed and replaced by a generous and very comfortable on-deck seating area for guests. The powerful sail plan has a square top main and 110% overlapping jib. The design focus is on steering – the sensitive helm makes driving the boat enjoyable. Push-button trimming of both main jib from the helm station adds to the enjoyment. The Hall carbon mast complements the B52′s carbon hull.

Crackerjack is a Nautors Swan but with racing still very close to his heart, the owner has also made sure he can show a respectable result during the occasional regatta.

Her deck layout allows for a relatively small crew being able to race her. This of course means she is a very simple Nautors Swan to cruise. There is ample room for guests to be comfortable but her layout also allows you the opportunity to get away from it all with a minimum of fuss and crew as required.

    RUPERT PROFESSIONAL BOATS

The one thing all of our customers have in common is the extremely high demands they put on their boats. Sjöfarts-verket – the Swedish National Maritime Administration – the Airborne Special Forces of the Swedish Royal Marines, Police and Fire departments all demand the highest standards of performance and reliability. These boats are their work tools, secure and economical to run and maintain. It is the demands of our customers that sets the standard for every Rupert boat we build.

The dashing Italian Mochi Craft Dolphin 44 is hard to resist after a few days aboard on Long Island’s East End.

She looks sensational, of course, even from a million miles away. As we cruised the waters of the North Fork, several yachtsmen circled to ogle and yell out questions. “See?” grinned Da Zara, after the third admirer promised to pop into the Allied office for an upclose look and test run, “We may even sell a boat today.”

But is a test drive with the Mochi 44 a little like the let-down of a second date with a supermodel? Depends on the supermodel. Some are gorgeous and speak several languages-likewise, the Mochi 44 has substance. Longterm commitment? We can’t speak to your personal issues, but she is surprisingly spacious. In fact, this could be the possible deal-clincher for those traditionalists made faint of heart by her price tag. With the Mochi 44 you get glamour and comfort.

The cockpit is large with leather bench seating on either side that curves around at the top. In the deck saloon, a C-shaped leather settee is to port, just aft of the helm, and wraps nicely around an extendable teak dining table. A credenza to starboard hides a refrigerator and stowage.

The helm layout has been tweaked from earlier versions-it’s handsome and sensible. Air conditioning vents keep the skipper cool on hot days, when he’s decided to open the retractable awning that’s set into the overhead. A leather helm seat folds into a backrest

As we see bigger ships coming out of the shipyards with enough space to park your favorite car and even an entire floating garage to keep your seagoing excursion hassle free, there’s also a need to add water sports in the luxury yacht. This neglected side has caught a Serbian designer Vuk Dragovic’s eye, who introduces a beautiful Atreides concept luxury yacht with a retractable pool to bring in more fun and water sports to give new dimensions to marine recreation
